Yeh, this is going to do wonders for EU's air pollution and CO2 emissions problems... Italy is a Kyoto signatory, hope they didn't forget. Most cities in southern and eastern Europe make Houston look good by comparison.

I think its great that they're increasing the speed limit in Italy. If they would do it here in the US it would be even better. Every time I drive somewhere on the freeway, I'm amazed at the idiocy, lack of courtesy, and plain lack of knowledge that inhabits our highways and freeways. I'm a little over 17 now, and its kind of scary to think that I'm going to be dealing with these freeways for probably the rest of my life. Whenever I'm driving with my dad, I get to listen to his stories about the roads back in his day, when people realized that the left lane was for passing, and if somebody faster came up behind you, they just gave you one or two flashes and you got out of the way. Nowadays, half the time I get passed its on the right (on 3+ lane roads). Somehow I find that much more appealing than some little old lady sitting in the left lane going 5 miles under the speed limit...

take a look at some figures, before...
In the USA:
275,562,673 inhabitants
126,868,744 cars (about 0.46 cars each)
41,821 killed in car accidents (about 1 dead every 6589)
In Italy:
56,305,568 inhabitants
31,416,686 cars (about 0.55 cars each)
6,410 killed in car accidents. (about 1 dead every 8784)
Each figure is taken from governative data.
Reading it, actually in the US , with all the limits and restrictions, the number of deaths per inhabitant is worst.
And become much worst if you count that the car density, in Italy, is much superior.

There are very strict rules of conduct on the Autostrada and Autobahn. No dumbasses going 55 in the fast lane
I like to drive fast and not feel I'm endangering or being endangered by other less attentive ( slower?) road users

Driving in Italy is heaven. Everyone knows that the left lane is a passing-only lane or the "drive insanely fast lane". I lived there for 5 months and when I rented a car, you can basically floor is on the autostrada (highway) most of the time. When there's a slow car ahead of you, a little hi-beam flash and they move out of your way, no harm done.
The craziest thing is when you're doing 120mph and you see some HIDs flashing behind you far away and closing quick! you move out of the way and a Ferrari flies by at at least 160mph. Happened to me 2 or 3 times, my little rental car just gets tossed!
