I agree. I think this mindset is lost among the younger generation, it's obnoxious and rude, especially when people outright ask "how much?". Counting eggs before they hatch certainly isn't a good way to start out. I say the OP learns this lesson on his own. Buy the expensive car first and find out the hard way.

only 3 jobs outta college pay 100k+ a year
2 of which, you will have no life and therefore you will not need a car, cuz u will be at the office all day.
ibank and consulting = no life for the first 2 years outta college. therefore save the money for 2 years
programmer w/ prior xp = buy the car and drive around the SV or seattle and have fun.

Btw, I live in CA in the bay area, that wage it not "typical" nor stable, otherwise our housing bubble wouldn't have been so bad. But the average income and amount of people making that kind of dough is probably higher than most of the country, but we also pay a whole lot more for housing, so it sorta balances out. Which is why guys doing what I do in some parts of TX can afford to build a house whereas I'm looking in the ghetto.

I seriously considered a job opportunity in Redwood City, CA, and after doing all the analysis figured I'd need to make at least $200K to justify it, and I'd have had to make a big downgrade in housing (renting something a lot smaller/plainer than what I own).
It sounded like my dream job on the surface (CFO of a motorcycle dealership chain/factory MX team/various parts businesses), but I'm glad it didn't pan out since the business tanked, all the execs got fired, and only one dealership is left!
I LOVE that part of the country (aside from CA fiscal mismanagement, traffic, and stupid draconian laws), but it's hard to make a move there feasible from an economic perspective.

Well if you do what you're supposed to and not commit any more than 25% of your take home to debt ($1500) and assuming I don't have a mortgage I'd get a 911 GT3. Throw the ol' mortgage back in I'd get a used Lotus Elise.

I bring in 5x the OP, and I don't even have a car. I just keep saving and buy more land. In fact, I don't even eat out. I just eat off the land. The circle of life.
