And I thought BMW couldn't make it look any uglier...

in 2003 I offered a dealer 57,000 for a new m3 cab without nav. they told me to take a hike...i bought my 04 S2000 for $31500 and a slightly used 04 tl for $27,000....now that same m3 cab is worth maybe $21,000 and my s2000 is worth maybe
$16,000 and my tl maybe $14,000. My point, two cars cost what one costs and are worth more when very used.
Take at look at the lease return bmw's, after 4 years they are worth maybe $25,000 plus or min....335i sedans....cost new $45,000. That's a real hit in 4 years and the mercs are worse....point being that these little overpriced ugly cars that drive well and wear the roundel have poor resale, so wait till they are a few years old for yours.

At the end of the way buying any high end car has multiple costs. Its not just about monthly cost, insurance, and maintenance. You gotta include depreciation. If you can't afford that than well you shouldn't be looking at those cars in the first place. But for $40k ill take a 3 series and that extra depreciation over anything from honda, toyota, hyundia; etc. All the "luxury" brands are gonna have higher costs. However, most people looking into these cars don't care.

Your comparing a totally different model run though. 2007 bmw M3s in decent condition still sell for a good amount. Coupes with MSRPs of 65k in 2007 still are worth at least $40k. 38% depreciation or a 62% residual over 4 years is pretty damn good. Now when the next generation m3s come out obviously these will depreciate a whole lot more. btw your estimation of a 4 year old 3 series of costing $50000 new and $25000 in 4 years is only 50% residual/depreciation. Thats a decent residual. Most cars run in the 45-58%. Also s2000s are a special scenario. After the stopped building them they have appreciated from all the prices ive seen.
