I think its time to let the S go. Help me find a new car.

Abarth's down to $16,590 according to Truecar here in the Chicago area. Wow. I was cross-shopping those with the Cooper S (still right at MSRP $24k) and the FR-S (same) before getting into my S. If the Abarth was available last spring at this price, it might have been a different story.
My car search recently was almost identical to yours (except a slightly lower budget). I was looking at the Mazda3 hatch and Fiat 500's. Both are awesome cars. The Fiat might be small for you, but dealers are giving really awesome deals on 2013 Abarths and Turbos right now.

She's not good with a manual, but it seems like an easy car to drive. Youtube is has some great videos on driving a manual she can refer to.

Fiat 500? Looks tiny. Or is it much bigger inside than it looks from the outside?

Indeed. That is Chicago-area pricing mind you, but I have to believe a other markets in the US will be close. No options but the only option I'd consider are the up-sized wheel/tire package and/or one of the tech convenience packages. Believe there have been claims that adding the moonroof cuts down significantly on headroom.

yeah look on truecar.com. I'm shocked hearing their going that cheap too. only the 2013 leftovers are though. roughly $7,000 off

I sat in, but did not drive, an Abarth. The reviews are correct - seating position is not conducive to a "sporty" driving feel. Its not uncomfortable, but you are sitting fairly high relative to everything else. Reminded me very much of a layout in a manual Mazda5 (first-gen). This is not a terrible thing.
Yes, it bigger feeling inside, especially with head room and seating position. We are going to look at an Abarth this weekend. 2013 with like 5K miles for 19K. The better half has been doing a lot of driving and the Range Rover mileage is becoming an issue. Seems like a great deal for a fun car with most of the major options one would want in a car. Plus the exhaust note and it's a hoot to drive.
