I hate the way people drive hybrids. Let's talk about the Prius since that's the prime offender. Not meaning the Lexus hybrids or the Accord or those cars.

I mean Prius (Insight) etc.

I read an editorial in one of the car mags about the way people drive these wheesers. They are already slow that's programed into the DNA but then on top of that the tools driving (many) will add insult to injury by driving as slow as possible. For example they will go from 0-60 in 30 seconds. That's great if they were only bothering themselves but there are other people in the world who are not trying to make a statement and could care less about driving as slow as possible. The Prius (etc.) is a slow car and the owners are driving it like it's a REAL SLOW car. Like they won't pull out into traffic if they have to give it some gas, so they will wait minutes to find a really good space to pull out. In such they don't care about normal traffic that's behind them. All they care about is saving a few pennies.

What I don't like is how some (many) Prius drivers will impose their warped lifestyle on me because I happen to get stuck behind them much like getting stuck behind a school bus.

the article pointed out these cars are not by themselves getting great gas mileage but because people drive like jerks (slow) to get MPGs. meaning if I have a Fit or a Mini and I drive like it's a friken Prius maybe I could get 40 mpg.
That's a stereotype like all S2000 owners are asian. Wildly exagerrated.

99% of the Prius drivers I see, drive it just like a normal car. When I had it, I drove it like a normal 4 cyl car. Are they speed racing down the street no. But they aren't doing 45 mph on the freeway either.

I have gone from LA to San Diego, & LA to Las Vegas doing/averaging 85 mph and still got 45 mpg with the Prius.

99% of the people in this world don't drive fast cars, they drive slow cars quickly. It's no different with the Prius. I have seen plenty of slow, OLD people driving Hondas, Camrys, Fords, etc. these days.

Every Prius owner I see is doing 10+ mph over the speed limit.

Cops just roll past them like they don't exist.

JUST WTF IS GOING ON

^ I've noticed that too, actually. From my experience spending 3+ hours daily on the 405, Prius drivers are among the most aggressive out there, and are very often speeding. I know, of course, that's a generalization too, but just sharing my experience.

I had to re-read the rant. It is even better on the second read

I think some people in here are failing to recognize it was a rant - not fact.

The article has some really good points though. It's probably more environmentally damaging to make a hybrid.

It's like current solar panels. Why isn't everyone using them? The reason is that the cost on the environment to make them is more than the savings of using one.

We should just learn to drive less if possible. End of.

You should google and look into the Prius. They have ALOT of issues. Many people have crashed them because the gas engine just engages on it's own. This has been blamed on floormats making the accelerator stick. This has also happened on cars with no floormats. Also you cant drive them in the snow or anywhere you get snow. People that own them are scared to drive them. I know this because i did alot of research on them
I live in ND, where it much can (and does) snow from Oct. through May. My father, who also lives in town, has a Prius and drives it all year around. In fact, this is the second Prius he has owned. When he first purchased his car, yes, he did have trouble driving in the winter. Why? Because the traction control was fighting the wheel spin from his terrible OE Goodyears and was going nowhere fast (but was getting great mileage!). He put a set of Blizzaks on his car for the winter, and now it is like a monster truck how he can just pull forward from a stop. So, in reality, the problem wasn't with the Prius, but with the tires designed for good mileage, not winter traction.

As for crashing the car because the ICU starts on its own: The engine is not always connected to the wheels. Just because the ICU is running, does not mean that it is directly powering the movement of the vehicle. Even if it is, the car will not suddenly accelerate/steer/pull/decelerate/swerve/etc. on its own because of the way the trans and whole hybrid setup is designed. Plus, the pedal isn't connected to the ICU, but is just a input to the computer so you can tell it how much torque to apply, either electric or gas. Between the CVT and the planetary gears in the transmission, the computer has very good control of the power going to the wheels.

BTW, yes my dad loves his car. Yes, drives it like it was just another car. He bought it so he could put his bike in the back not for the "greeness" of it. No, he has not had any trouble with his car, or his last Prius. And yes, I like living in ND.

he wins, no argument about it. it takes more energy and resources to make a prius than in keeping your original car, cradle to grave.

put that in your granola bar and chew it
