Hyundai overtook Honda?

Part of their slide is because of the US...
Honda is a middle-class car. The middle class disappears = Honda's main buyer base disappears.
Even though you can find Hondas all over the world, the US auto market is the biggest in the world, and integral to their profits.
Hyundai's bread and butter since they came to being are cheap cars. Even now that they're making the Genesis, which is on level with an Infiniti, Lexus, etc., they're still undercutting the competition badly. When Nissan, Toyota, and Honda decided to launch their upmarket divisions, they didn't undercut the Germans as much as Hyundai has them.

What Hyundai would anyone here buy over a Honda, given your choice of just those 2 makes?

Hyundai will rival Toyota one day - competition between the Koreans and Japanese is fierce. When the Japanese occupied Korea they were really nasty about how they treated the Koreans. The Koreans never forgot - their vengeance is deep and they're playing it out through business.
Plus, Honda is investing in the hydrogen business...
They always can fall back to what got them on the map, motorcycles.

Hey, don't knock Honda mowers. I have one and love it! It's been flawlessly reliable for 10 years.
Anyway, Honda still makes cars (and excellent commuter cars), so you needn't worry. This thread was about how surprised I was that Hyundai jumped from 10th to being 5th largest in the world in one year. That's wow!
Edit: make that 13 years on the mower (not 10).

The same can be said for Hyundai - though the different operating units are no longer as tightly integrated as w/ Honda, they are the world's largest shipbuilder and have a variety of other business interests.
If you look at the entire Hyundai family and the entire Honda family, I'd be surprised if Honda was actually as large as Hyundai. In terms of net income, I'd bet Hyundai's ship building company is bigger than all of Honda, let alone the Hyundai motor company, computer memory company, department stores, civil engineering, etc. etc.

I can't find Hyundai's financial reports, but I doubt Hyundai Group's net income is much bigger than Honda's.
Hyundai Heavy Industries (does NOT include Hyundai Motor)
FY07 (USD millions)
sales: 16,556.2
net income: 1,850.4
Honda Motor Corp.
FY08 (3/31 FYE) (USD millions)
sales: FY07 (USD millions)
sales: 1119,801
net income: 5,989
