Say you are waiting 2-3 years and you don't want to go over $100K maybe could wiggle above but not by much.
new or used
The benifit of 2-3 year window is that some cars that are not quite out like the 600hp Viper or GT-R (etc.) and also cars that are now over-price such as the 911 turbo, GT3, R8, Vantage and Ford GT (?) will be under $100K.
not sure if Gallardos will be under $100K by then (?)

You can break it into 2 cars such as a new M3 and a used Elise, but I would rather hear what ONE nice car you'd want.

I seriously wouldn't mind a GT3, but the Viper with 600hp on tap would get your attention also.
Its too soon to say about the GT-R since I know next to nothing about the price, weight etc..

The reality of likely needing a vehicle that will accommodate my Newfoundland is sinking in, so my planned 335i will likely morph into a manual X3 sometime within the next 10 months. After that, the only thing I can think of being interested in is a direct-injected Boxster S (in addition to the X3) within the next 4-5 years. But, I have serious doubts about whether I'd want to spend $100K on cars for just me, regardless of whether or not I can "afford" it.

You should get a pocket pooch so you can put him in the glove box j/k
I wonder if I could pull the trigger on a car like the GT3 when a Boxster + M3 would get me twice the cars.

In about 2.5 years, my S2000 will be ten years old. The weather has been really nice here so I've been driving it a lot, rather than my normal DD truck. I've fallen in love with it all over again, so in reality I'll likely keep it for a long time more. (Possibly with some power and handling mods, not sure.)
But, in line with your question - do you think the 997 GT3 will fall below $100k in a few years?
That, or an Exige S.
I can't think of anything else that is, for me, a "worthy" replacement under $100k for the S2000. (For example, the Cayman S - awesome car. Just not what I'm looking for.)

My "id" would go for a 360, but my "ego" would probably end up w/ a used 997 Turbo at that price range, "superego" says a prius but that's not going to happen
