Default how horrible would this car be? 1993 RX7

I currently do not have any car that i can take to the track......(my mustang is a covertible)..... how horrible would this car be? how much are engines in case this one dies?

$6k and it is fairly close to me that I could actually take it for a spin before buying....

as a track beater, i probably don't care about the seats or paint...

Road track or drag strip? The car will be great at either.

You will need to learn to work on the car yourself because not too many people can.

Do yourself a favor, and start saving for an engine now.. who knows what the engine currently in the car has seen. If you want a track car you are going to want to do work to the engine anyways, porting (to whatever degree you want) and 3mm apex seals for saftey. Check out;

In the mean time, you can do a few safety mods for the current engine. Get an aftermarket downpipe, silicon vacuum hose job, and upgrade the radiator at least.

I wouldn't class it as "terrible" my brother had a 94 RX-7 that had @ 90k when he sold it, with the original engine. Maintenance is the biggest issue, service can cost a small fortune with all the vacuum lines, heat issues, etc. If you can obtain the VIN, have a Mazda dealer run it and see what you're getting into. RX-7's can either win your heart or break it, history of the car is the biggest issue. At $7200, a couple grand of proper maintenance could make the car a runner again.

the rotery engine's typically last ~100Kmiles, the manufacturer has a deal where you send in a core and get a rebuilt. twin turbo, verify no oil leaks.

be prepared to work on the car your self... alot.

Why not get a 1st gen RX-7 and put the 3rd gen motor in it?

hey, fd's run 100%, 60% of the time

but... if you dont mind a learning adventure and you know how to turn a wrench...... itd be a great track car

rotaries are much much simpler than normal 4-stroke motors, so once you know what youre doing /looking at, its fairly simple, just dont let all the vacuum lines confuse you

I don't know if I'd use the term horrible to describe the purchase of that car. FD3's are some of the coolest sports cars ever made. I desperately want to own one someday! The only thing to beware is the maintenance costs associated with a turbo rotary engine. Due to the design, Apex seals tend to wear out quickly, and will require replacing. There have also been some issues with ensuring consistent and adequate fuel flow to prevent detonation. The other thing to consider is there are not many mechanics who can work on these cars successfully. There's a really good one in Allentown, PA that would work for you. It might be a bit of a hike, but they will get the work done properly.
