They were the first to put styrofoam in the helmet--until then makers used cork. They certainly are safety trendsetters and awesome lids. Lots of people will say "you've got an Arai-shaped head or you've got a Shoei-shaped head--buy the one that fits." However, the new stuff from HJC and others, while less expensive, are just as safe. Some tests have even shown that the extra "give" from plastic/composite outer shells are more forgiving in a crash than the fiberglas/composite shells used by Arai and Shoei.
Unless you buy a Harley-wannabe WWII blitzkrieg half helmet with a fake "DOT" sticker, you should be fine...

Arai is good...HJC works just as well for less money. HJC is pretty common in the paddock. Most racers look for "bang for the buck". My current helmets are HJC. We've owned and still do Arai, Shoei, and of course HJC. They're all excellent...it just depends on how much money you want to spend on a helmet.
