How to calculate rim width vs tire width?

Default How to calculate rim width vs tire width?

I am wondering for

- 7"
- 7.5"
- 8"
- 8.5"

rims, how wide the tires can go?

and what does it mean by people saying i can go with a +10mm tire width?

Tire manufacturers sometimes post recommended rim ranges for each tire on their website. Allowable rim width does vary with tire design.

For tire width, you can go pretty much as wide as will fit on the wheel and still seat the bead propely... I mean, I've seen S2000s with a 245 width Hoosier autoX tire crammed onto a stock 6.5" width front wheel! Of course, a Hoosier radial autoX tire has really stiff sidewalls, so you might not want to try that trick with some mush-sided all-seasons because thy will feel like crap and you might risk popping the bead...
