Default How bad cars happen - A Lutz story

How do bad cars happen? How, for instance, did Pontiac's Aztek—the greatest failed model in recent history—get all the way from flawed design to ugly product? We asked Bob Lutz, our industry expert and man-about-town, if he knew anything. Turns out, he knows quite a bit.

I think if breaking bad had come around while the aztek were still for sale it could have saved it. It's the car of choice for a terminally ill chemistry teacher gone meth-king!

Hahaha. So true. That show was the best press that car ever got.

This is a good read, by the way.

Lutz has a bunch of little posts over at R&T. Usually good reading.

Though a bit of an over simplification, it sounded like organizational/managerial hubris. This is still common.

I'm sure it's like most complicated matters: the explanation is never simple.

Sir, Truer words have rarely been written. I try to relate that sentiment when I get questions regarding healthcare (my career field), but my responses are usually (even among my peers) greeted with entrenched political/economic dogma.

reminds of something I saw on the History Channel( Discovery?) about Hitlers' tanks..

He loved big scary intimidating tanks and the Generals were afraid to argue with him about their tactical uselessness.

IIRC, they built one so heavy it sank into ground and finally one with a huge gun that needed two divisions and a Railroad to be assembled so it could fire 20 rounds.

Pretty funny actually

On the topic of the Aztek, the best non performance car pontiac ever built was the Vibe. Oh wait that was a Toyota.
