I owned a 1969 Mustang Mach I 428 Super Cobra Jet, and several 69 and 70 351 Mustangs. Also had 64, 73, and 85 Vette's, a 403 Trans Am, and a bunch of others. I need to scan in some photos.
Charlie I thought you were nuts when you sold that Vette. It's been a few years now and I haven't changed my mind.

Repeat after me:
426 HEMI!!!
Superbird, Daytona Charger, 'Cuda
My fav., the Hemi 'Cuda
By the way, some of the nastiest iron back in the 60's and very early 70's were the 390 and 427 'stangs.
Can't go wrong with a Chevelle SS 396 or 454 either!

Here's a nice list of production cars to work with:

I seem to remember a '63 Plymouth Savoy with 413 being the first stock body car under 12 seconds for the 1/4

I currently own a 1970 Camaro RS/SS. It was my first car in 1992. It's fun to step from the high reving S2000 to a torque monster like the Camaro.
My advice would be to find a high production model like a mustang or Camaro and mod the hell out of it. Just remember to look at what aftermarket support is available for the model year you pick. For instance, 1967-69 Camaros have the most support - you can almost get every part from places like Classic Indust. and Year One. On the other hand, for my 1970 some parts are nearly impossible to find.
I'd post pics, but I'm at work.
