Uh, no. Muscle cars are considered to be the general umbrella under which pony cars are a part of. Muscle cars included anything from the Olds Rocket 88s of the late 40s and early 50s, to the GTOs, to the Falcons and Furys of the 60s and early 70s.

Pony cars are the smaller (for their day), stubby two-door big-engine coupes of the 60s and early 70s like the Challenger, Camaro, Mustang, Firebird, Cougar and the Plymouth one who's name I'm completely forgetting... Pony cars got their name because of the Mustang, which had the "pony" icon on it (which was of course meant to symbolize a Mustang, not a pony).

The difference between "muscle" and "pony" absolutely had nothing to do with performance packages added to certain cars. A Chevelle is a muscle car regardless of its option package, unless it's a Malibu with a factory 6-cylinder or something.

Probably a lot newer than what you wanted, but it just turned 21. Also it doesn't have a V8, but it can eat some for lunch...

I believe that Mustang belongs to J. Fendel, from my old CASOC race club (I am not racing for a while now).

Okay, can we agree on this "muscle car?" A full-on custom 1969 Camaro with how-quality paint, bead-blasted to bare metal and multi-pass smoothed (note the shaved door handles). The engine bay is eye-blinding chrome. The lump itself is a custom 383 stroker with a VERY lumpy cam and seriously angry 40-series mufflers. Enough power to turn tires into smoke in a big hurry. Nothing special about the interior but it is more custom work (you can just make out the race-bucket seats).
