It's not rated for 40 mpg anywhere, highway or city. That said, plenty of people have gotten 40 mpg on the highway in the Fit and also the Civic.
I drove down to Houston in our 2008 Civic yesterday to pick up my wife and kids at the airport (just crossed the 40K mile mark recently). It took 50.5 miles for the first mark (of twenty) on the fuel gauge to disappear, which was a personal record for me.
I ran for 215 miles and had seven of twenty fuel gauge marks gone on the digital fuel gauge. That equates to about 615 miles on a 14 gallon tank, or 43.9 mpg, all highway. That's about 1.2 mpg better than my last trip down there (rainier weather with a little more hard driving to avoid standing water). It all comes down to how you drive, I guess....

I know, and I agree. However, last time I made that trip I was in the high 42.X mpg range (measured at the pump) and I wasn't seeing the gauge drop as slowly as it was this time.
I have measured, multiple times, 42.7 mpg in the Civic we have. I fill up at the same pump (doing a return trip to the airport or to meet up with family in Louisiana) for the sake of consistency.
At 55 mph speed limits, I have no problem getting high 40 mpg. Another publication did a recent test where, at 55 mph, they were seeing high 40 mpg in an Acura TSX, which is heavier, less aerodynamic and has a bigger motor than our Civic.

The second paragraph pretty much sums up my opinion of Honda. No sporty models other then the Civic Si and Accord coupe. They need to being back the type-r to the US, a real type-r, not like the Si sticker package on the Fit.

I average 16mpg driving 85mph in my Yukon.

I can't drive 55! I'd rather take the fuel consumption hit.

I drive in the right lane on the freeway behind all the hyper mile cars that are going at a casual speed under 55 (under the speed limit) usually...
Still 27 mpg
Still 27 mpg
I've achievied 30.4 mpg highway in the S with cruise control locked at 60.
Honda has always been a stubborn automaker and the S was my first and probably will be my last Honda. They might as well start making televisions and refrigerators now.
