They don't have to get bad mileage. A Ranger, for example, gets 24 city, 29 highway. Some people just like to sit up when they drive.

I think the idea of driving a truck every day is pretty silly. OF course there are exceptions like if you work in construction or something. A truck is for doing work. They are big, get bad mileage, are heavy and are unsafe for people around you. The honda is no different compared to accords, civics etc. If I needed a truck I wouldn't get a new truck and I would use it when I needed it.

At these weights, I rather tow with a Pilot/MDX, with the exception of the Excusion. The Excursion diesel is towing GOD but that is not a MDX/Pilot/Ridgeline market competitor so why make comparison to it or any other heavy duty truck.
If the amount your towing is within the tow rating you will have no problems. Please don't hypothosize something to death in which you have no experience yet.

Not only that, many trucks get better mileage than our little roadster (especially if said roadster is driven the way it was meant to be). The Mazda B2300 gets 24/29
