Honda Rebel

You can buy a good used Ninja 250 for less than $1500.
You can find a good used EX500 for less than $1800.
A good first-gen SV650 will run you less than $2500.
I can't freaking imaging paying $1500 for even a brand new Rebel.
What kind of sportbike are you thinking of later?
IMO, you don't need to spend multiple thousands of dollars to get a great sportbike. The EX500 or SV650 are both MUCH better real-world bikes than what you're probably considering for the future, and way cheaper.

Rebels hold their value REALLY well as everyone wants them for learning or cheap gas commuting. You can ride it for a season and sell it for more than what you paid. Win-win in my book.

I used to have it's brethren, the nighthawk 250. Held it's value well and solid learning bike. Plus, it's light and you can do crazy things with them. I use to bring pizza's home by bungee cording them to the back. haha. Plus, you can maneuver that thing all over the place into places that sportbikes can't fit.
If you want sportbikes, look into a ninja 250. The new 250 is ridiculously cool looking and honestly more than enough bike. There are long time riders who choose 250's as their ride of choice. The older ones are cheap and hold their value well too.
Can't go wrong either way, in my opinion.

Most beginner bike will hold its value well. There are just better options out there. Rebel has crap brakes, weak motor, bad suspension....
I think people will say good things about them, just cause they own one. As soon as they sell it and get something better they will see the difference.

It's not that bad. People just rather look "cool" than being on a Rebel. You should get it. It's fun to ride around in. Who gives a shit that it's only a "250." The grass is always greener on the other side. Only squids think you should get something that looks "cool."

just gotta post that i took mrs wanabe on an errand run on the back of the rebel last night. i expected to feel the load and thought that the engine would lug under the extra weight. it handled and rode probably better with two!! (the ride was firmer). absolutely no loss of power.
i continue to be impressed by this little cycle... i am aware that a bigger bike would have more power, but hey- i dont need more power yet. especially after the "two riders" experience!
as to the look- had a neighbor ask me about my "harley" the other day- ha, ha- boy thats some cheap harley!!
