Default Honda Rebel

So I'm looking to buy a sportbike later this year. But until then I'm going to be saving money and have a little over a grand saved up. Now here's my situation, my friends mom has a Honda Rebel that she only used for 70 miles before deciding she wanted a Harley. They're asking price is 1800, but I think I can get it down to as low as 1500. It wouldn't be a bad way to enjoy the summer, and save a little bit of gas money during my commute (all street driving ). I can probably trade this bike in for over a grand this year if I wanted to.

Now would it be a bad idea to pick this up, I think it's a fairly good deal? And is this bike truly a girls only bike? Is it possible I could buy it and pull it off til fall/winter time? I really want to just get out there and ride, and I can have this within the next month.

They had those on the MSF class I took WAAAAAY back when. Fun little bikes. However, you don't want to be saddled with one for the summer. You're better off just not riding

I dont think much of Rebels, just dont. For 1500 bucks I would get a EX500, GS500, or if you can find a cheap one - Hawk NT650

Between that and not riding? I'd pick riding.

So, after 70 miles she was ready to trade up?

They are easy to ride, which is why they are used in classes, but they are small, and underpowered... You might want a used bike that is bigger and has more power for the same money.

... is it that bad?

I'm thinking it'll be pretty fun getting around town in, and go on a midnight cruise with. Something to hold me off til I can get me a nice supersport.

Yes, they are that bad. In fact it took me and my buddy about 10 minutes of hard thinking to come up with a worst then Rebel streetbike - Kawi Eliminator 125... I would rather cruise around on a Ruckus or a Zuma then one of those shitboxes

Seriously, for 1500 you can get a better bike.

contrary opinion:

the rebel is a great bike to learn on- and for that price you should be able to sell it for close to what you pay for it after you have ridden awhile.

my concern on a low mileage bike would be that if it hasnt been ridden, the carbs could need some tlc...

imo, it is a honda- so what really could be wrong with it? !

mrs. wanabe's 2 year old / 400 mile rebel (some seafoam and new plugs took care of this couch-potato):

the main mod that this bike needs is new horns- the stocker is way too wimpy to be safe... duals will do fine- just put them on this bike. now its a great 70 mpg way to get around.

btw, just in case you want more info- the rebel boards are at:

this bike is perfect for mrs wanabe- i keep trying to talk her into a bigger bike now that she has some experience, but she loves this one. very easy to handle, nice seat height, and she likes the looks.
