That's below top range from these brands, unless you're considering something like a Gold Wing.

We can't give you give advice anyway until you mention what kind of bike you want (cruiser, sportbike, tourer?), experience, etc...

MSRP:

CBR954RR - $10,599.
GSX-R1000 - $10,399.
YZF-R1 - $10,299.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that $14k is "midrange." These are top-of-the-line near-race-bike Japanese donorcycles.

$14k will get you a nicely top of the line Japanese sportbike plus all of the required accessories plus some left over money for some track days.

For $14K, I like the Ducati ST4s, BMW R1150GS, Aprillia Futura or Capanord. All will do 1,000 mile days without you feeling like you where worked over, and both have enough "sport" in them to embarrass many a pure sport bike.

Or by a liter-class Japanese sport bike if you like to ride in a crouch all day... I think the Honda CBR would be my pick for a non-track machine.

Keep in mind, however, that some of the new bikes that are absolutely killer on the track don't make very good road bikes...
