It just happened that a large set of people at one point decided that their FWD econobox models would be their enthusiast car.
If you ask me, what happened was sports cars all became incredibly expensive, with no real options save (eventually) the Miata for people that wanted a new sporty car. With the overengineered and pricey cars of the 80s-90s, people without much money turned to cheap fwd econoboxes to get their hp fix. It worked in the 90s, but now there are real choices for people looking for fun inexpensive sports cars, so there's less demand for tuning a fwd econobox into something passable.

I think anyone who has driven a Fit will agree that the interior space and versatility are pretty impressive in that car. If there was an Si trim with 160-170hp it would be a pretty fun little car to drive. Also, wow some would like to say that Honda makes 'econoboxes' and not sports cars for the most part...that's a bit mis-leading. Honda has...in the past, brought a different take on 'econoboxes'. While the CRX wasn't a 'sports car'...that along with the Del Sol, Prelude and a couple of others have offered a 'sporty' and entertaining cars to drive that also happened to be pretty economical. Honda is the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines on the planet so I seriously doubt any speculation on this forum will impact their future endeavors too much but I do believe they will bring an Si trim Fit to market at some point in the next couple of years.
