My Fiance' pick up her 2004 Element (LX, 4WD, 5sp.) last June and have racked up 12K of very enjoyable miles. The E has been everything that we thought it would be and more. The real-time 4WD has been great through this nasty Cleveland winter and couple road trips. We have gotten 26+ MPG on numerous occations. I think we will be holding on to this one for awhile and it is the perfect compliment for the S. I highly recommend the 4WD and 5spd tranny.
You have to tell me what you are doing to get 26+ mpg. No matter how I drive mine, I never get more than 22 mpg.

I know I normally drive like a bat out of hell, but even on my grandma-driving tanks of gas (tried it twice) I ended up getting 21 each time.

we may have hit 26+ mpg ONCE, and that was during a rainstorm from chicago to new york while we had to drive below 55mph.

please share how you've managed to get more than 26. i've tried gasoline additives, and a k&n filter.. hell, i almost bought that snake oil laden 'tornado' thing off of tv!

the lack of aerodynamics seriously hinder its fuel efficiency. we rarely get over 225 miles per full tank.. and what a tiny tank it is!

ours is a awd, ex Auto and that could be it. it might also be that we've got a thule rack + windscreen that could be detering some of the aerodynamics of the brick.

If you get the Element, at least get the manual transmission
