Help picking a new DD

Was your wife's Prius bought new? It's different buying a new Prius, driving it to 150K miles and keeping up with the general maintenance versus buying one used and dealing with someone else lack of maintenance and/or abuse.
I've read enough horror stories on Prius chat... lol

Read the requirements people
fuel efficient (35-40+ highway MPG)
Mazda 3, Corrola, and Civic do not get those numbers.
What issues are you talking about with the Prius? The battery pack is the only potential issue. My wife's 2005 Prius has 155k miles now and still running other than regular maintenance. Battery is not as good as before, but still running.... hopefully for another 50k. The ICE, it has just broken in. Same brake pads from new.
Price on NEW battery packs are getting cheaper. Last one I hear was $2500 total from a dealership.
And my local mechanic had one Prius in his shop to replace the battery pack. That Prius had over 300k miles as a delivery car. My mechanic said that car had no problem the whole 300k miles other than regular maintenance.
Let's put it this way. I rather get a new battery good for another 150k miles than a rebuild tranny/motor, and then hope for the best.

used Prius - they can be be a handful and turn into basket cases if you're not careful with your pre-purchase inspection. expect to see 150K+ miles on the odo for the price range you want.

Sorry, I thought a Mazda 3 and Honda Civic were capable of up to 35 mpg highway, thus fitting at bottom end of requirement.
1992 Civic Hatchback VX (whatever VX means) is rated at 39 city, 49 highway.

A 2005 Mazda 3 with a manual is rated only at 32 mpg highway, not sure if a 3 mpg deficiency is a deal breaker or not.
Something is going to have to be sacrificed in this for a sub $5,000 car with 35+ mpgs

I would be surprised if you could find a Fit in that price range.
'92-'00 Honda Civics can achieve your mileage all day long, but its getting harder and harder to find clean well cared for examples of these cars. Especially the hatchbacks.
Sad stuff

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Been getting a little more serious in my search. And no a few MPG is not a deal breaker, if I get a great deal on something well cared for as long as it's 30+ mpg hwy I'm ok with it.
Looks like mazda 3s are a good direction to look at. TONS on the used market.

2001-2005 Civic Lx.....Im getting 33 mpg COMBINED, and thats with 18" wheels.....Plenty for sale under $5k, with 100-120k miles.....
Dont get a DX, no cruise control and dont get a automatic. The 01-03 has issues.
