Help picking a new DD
Well I'm going to be looking for a new daily driver soon. Going to be transferring job locations soon and will be doing a 60 mile round trip commute 3x a week. Right now my daily driver is a 2009 GMC Acadia, which gets decent MPG for an SUV (18/23ish) but not great as far as a commuter. Not trying to commute with the s2000 everyday either.
Im Also planning on buying a house soon so need to free up some cash. After I sell the GMC I am looking to spend maybe $3k-5k on a reliable, very fuel efficient DD.
Heres what I want.
under 5k
reliable
4 door or hatchback
fuel efficient (35-40+ highway MPG)
I could care less how cool the car is, how slow it is, how ugly it is, etc.. as long as its reliable, fuel efficient, practical and not tiny it works for me.
thanks guys

Toyota yaris - early models, with 80K+ miles
honda fit - early models, with 100K+ miles
jetta TDI (old one)
used Prius - they can be be a handful and turn into basket cases if you're not careful with your pre-purchase inspection. expect to see 150K+ miles on the odo for the price range you want.

Price on NEW battery packs are getting cheaper. Last one I hear was $2500 total from a dealership.
And my local mechanic had one Prius in his shop to replace the battery pack. That Prius had over 300k miles as a delivery car. My mechanic said that car had no problem the whole 300k miles other than regular maintenance.
Let's put it this way. I rather get a new battery good for another 150k miles than a rebuild tranny/motor, and then hope for the best.

Read the requirements people
Mazda 3, Corrola, and Civic do not get those numbers.
What issues are you talking about with the Prius? The battery pack is the only potential issue. My wife's 2005 Prius has 155k miles now and still running other than regular maintenance. Battery is not as good as before, but still running.... hopefully for another 50k. The ICE, it has just broken in. Same brake pads from new.

Was your wife's Prius bought new? It's different buying a new Prius, driving it to 150K miles and keeping up with the general maintenance versus buying one used and dealing with someone else lack of maintenance and/or abuse.
I've read enough horror stories on Prius chat... lol
