she is not into flash
she is into understated class
not into speed

into spending my money
appreciates fine art

thank you all for the suggestions. it is very helpful. i guess i am leaning towards the accord. it seems to me the insurance would be lower than the bmw also, don't ya think?

I'd add to the list of considerations the Acura CL or TL. They have most (if not all) of the luxury of a BMW 3 series, but are a bit cheaper at around $28-29k. Insurance will be lower than the 3 series as well. Definate resemblance to the Accord, but a bit bigger and a bit nicer. The sole option is a navigation system which will add about $2100 to the cost and push the price over your $30k limit.
The TL/CL is not flashy, is fairly classy, reasonably quick, the Bose sound system would appeal to most people, is hardly trendy, and will suck up 29000 of your hard-earned dead presidents. And, it's a Honda!

... the one on the right looks like she may be trouble - into flash, not understated, into speed, loud sound, trendy, likes to spend lots of your money...!! Better start saving for what she is going to want!
Good luck with your endeavor - I think its great she gets a new car! I got a family hand me down - a 1980 Mercury Bobcat station wagon - with FAKE WOOD on the sides...!!!

I would also recommend the Acura CL or TL. I had an Accord Coupe EX V6 before the S2000 and loved it, but the Acura has a lot better sound system and you get the bonus of dealing with Acura for service issues.

Sorry, but I don't think the Accord, either in sedan or coupe trim is stylish or classy. What's the fun of driving something that every other person has?
I'd recommend something like:
1) Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper S
2) BMW 325i, though arguably not a good value.
3) Infiniti G35, very good value - will be test driving this car this week.
4) Mazda 626 5-door. Looks terrific, very European styling with the hatchback.
5) Jetta GLI - very popular among women for the price/class/value relationship. Highly recommended. A sure hit.
Some cars I'd consider but maybe too sporty for her:
6) 350Z. Starts at $26,269.
7) RX-8. Very cool design. Will be under $30,000.
