I ran side by side with two E36 M3s and the 3.2L pulled on my S2000 while the 3.0L stayed even.
BTW, I spend a lot of time in both of the places you mention. CA would be a great place for a roadster. I miss having the S2000 whenever there is a warm summer night. Honestly though, for me it's too hot there to go top down during the day. It's even worse when you get stuck in traffic.

Is it possible to get up to 220-230 whp in the S2K without FI? And while staying CARB legal? And how much would it cost? I can pick up a nice S2K for around $15k and put a few grand into it to make it a bit quicker. Just wondering how much room I have to work with. I am a complete foreigner to Hondas and modifications...

One of your criteria is low cost of ownership/maintenance. I've owned 4 bimmers (1st was E36 M3) and although I loved driving them, they aren't cheap to own out of warranty. Of the cars on your list, the S2000 and STi meet the criteria better. The MX-5 is also a fun car to drive.
You did say you don't want to take a step backwards from the M3. Have you entertained the thought of a Porsche 911? I bought a 1988 coupe with 37k miles on the ODO for less than your price limit. If you are willing to consider an M roadster, another M3 or a Mini, give it some thought. I am thrilled with my 911. I really like the S, too but the 911 has that something extra which few cars have.

i've owned a e46 bmw before buying the S. it was reasonably high mileaged, maintained well. but the constant maintaince cost of the car was getting ridiculous when it's out of warranty. while nothing major was wrong (engine, trans), everything else starts to go and adds up.

So, it's an S2K I'm after. Anyone have a good one for sale?? Thanks for all of the suggestions!

I bought the S2k for the same reason. Was at the Porsche dealer...running the numbers...had checkbook in hand. Had the willpower to walk out to think about the decision and a buddy who was with me suggested looking at the Honda. 2 days later was driving my s2k and it's been the most enjoyable car I've ever owned (I've had it for longer than any other car I've owned). The car it was replacing...an e36M3.

Alright guys... it came down to a Boxster S and an S2K. The Boxster S will cost me $10K more and likely be infinitely more expensive to repair in the long run. I also read through this very interesting thread on the Porsche forums where most equated the two cars (some thought the S2K was superior!) http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=50405
