To hear people complain about how expensive it is
#271
We use a lot of energy and we make a lot of stuff. Actually, our energy use/stuff made ratio is considerably better than the average. However, we are enriching some folks that are a problem to pretty much everyone. Even our friends in Europe are beginning to wake up to that fact.
Increasing the number of "nucular" generation plants here won't do much to curb our need for imported oil unless we start using plug-in hybrids or use the electricity to manufacture hydrogen for use in fuel cells. Although I do prefer the nukes to coal just from an air/water purity standpoint.
It would help our diesel situation a bunch if we could get the people that are burning fuel oil to convert to natural gas. My understanding is that we don't have enough refining capacity to easily meet the fuel oil and diesel demand.
I don't know how many flavors of gasoline we are refining currently, but if we could cut back to winter/summer, low altitude/high altitude and leave it at that, we should be able to free up some refinery capacity.
It's going to be painful for a while. People are already changing their buying habits. In ten years or so the domestic fleet will make a big move towards economy.
