Another suggestion - Avalon. Luxury and comfort for (relatively) cheap.
The trunk is huge and gets about 24 MPG on the way. 19 MPG City.

Foresters are a great little car/ute/wagon/whatever you want to call it. I have a turbo one, so I may be a little bit biased. I can tell you this though, the gas mileage isn't great on the turbo OR the non-turbo. Expect 18-20 in the city and 21-24 on the hwy. All the automatic Foresters utilize an archaic 4-speed (even my '10) and the 5-speeds are hard to find in turbo trim (also with that tranny you start running into reliability issues with anything over 300-320ish whp). Just something to keep in mind if you mod.

I can tell you, it's tough. I leased my mine, so I don't treat it with the same regard as my s2000 and it takes it all. You'd be amazed at the sheer amount of cargo you can stuff into it as well. It's a pretty good compromise between daily driver and fun at the wheel.
Wait so the auto tranny can take more abuse than the manual one?
Honda/Acura/BMW-e46 could all learn a thing or two from Subaru!
Sorry, I should've clarified. Neither tranny is particularly strong, but the majority of modded Foresters on the scooby forums are 5speeds so those are the ones you usually read about giving up the ghost . Once they break, a lot of people opt to swap in the STI 6-speed. I haven't seen too many autos mod heavily to the engine (I'm sure they're out there, just haven't seen many). They seem to stop modding around 300hp to the crank.

Another FYI, you can only get the 09+ turbo model with an automatic.

I picked up a 98 corolla and couldn't be happier with it. Paid $1500 with 180k miles and good tires. Needed brakes/starter. Otherwise it's been reliable as hell. It's currently upto 205k miles and still gets 38-40mpg highway.

FYI, having a beater car that you don't care about in any way, shape or form is great! I picked up a patio furniture set with mine. Had to balance the table over the roof to get it down the road to my house. Scratches? Who cares?

X2. I paid $1088 for my 99 accord ex, 5 speed, about 2-3 months ago. Brand new tires and brakes.

Gets 32+ combined mpg on 87.

I dont like it getting scratched or door dinged, though.
