How did you come to the conclusion that GM has their product and quality under control? I do not see that picture! First off the new CTS ,G8, and Camaro looks like they are going to be falling into the good category but still you have all those full size pickups and SUV things with way too many models with almost no market to sell them to then you have the hot segment of economy cars and the AVEO is not anywhere up to par with the Fit or Fiesta (All early reports say the new Ford is Awesome) . The interior of the Impala is still GM cheap. The Colorado/Canyon is < the Tacoma. The Solstice/Sky is < the S2000 or as Consumer Reports says "The S2k was most reliable car in its class while the Solstice was the least reliable in its class ". Looks like to me they still have a long way to go to be competitive in product or quality and the Volt is an unproven technology . Next you add in the economy the way it is and the financial crisis plus GM's cash burn and the only thing I see is a vision from a Tom Hank's movie - " Houston we have a Problem".
Given just how far off base you have been in the past I'm not even sure I should take your question seriously. In this case, in general GM has good products in just about every sector. Some are not that great such as the Cobalt and Colorado but none are bad vehicles and many like the Malibu, CTS and trucks are very good.
Sorry, deal with it.

GM needs their currency base (+/- 11bn), that's why they want a merger. GM only has 8-12 months of cash before they hit their maintenance limit. They will eliminate the majority of Chrysler's products if the merger does take place. GM cannot get credit and will fail in the next year if they do not get access to credit or secure reserves elsewhere, such as with chrysler. We will finally see the elimination of all these idiotic domestic cars sharing the same chassis.

I doubt it'll even take place anyway.
To me it looks like the Cerebus guys want GMAC and GM gets to scuttle a competitor and grab its cash, industrial assets and brands.
See ya Chrysler. Don't let the door hit you.
Kind of sad, but just reality.

Honda Fit base msrp= 13850
Chevrolet Aveo base msrp= 11460
So about a 22% premium for the Fit, yeah, that's a real fair comparison.

You'll make the money back at the end.
They're in the same category.

It may, in fact, happen soon:

GM has about $11B in spending cash (loses about $1B per month) and cannot get credit due to its junk status, it's desperate to get its hands on Chrysler's assets and cash.
