My gf is about to purchase a new car for her daily commuting. She really wants the MINI Cooper, but her father and brother are telling her that they suck. They claim that there are a lot of problems on them. I'm assuming their build quality is on par with BMW, since BMW is the parent company and they build them at the same factories. Anyone care to shed some light on this? Other than that, I'm hoping she can get a base RSX or the new Accord sedan. Preferably in the $18-22K range, suggestions appreciated. Her dad is insistent on buyting a Civic or a Corolla, I will if he buys that for her.

I've heard that the biggest problem is that the windshield is prone to cracking due to it's shape. Many of the problems are supposedly being fixed in the '04 version (including cup holders that will finally hold a Starbucks large coffee).
A new RSX-S can be had at $22k- you might have to hassle the dealer, but it can be done.

Well, if she's really going to get a car to commute to school then the Civic or Corolla is a logical choice if you think about it.
The mini doesn't have the reliability of any Honda or Toyota. But, it has the sex appeal I suppose. It's reliability is on par with the parent company (BMW).
Between the base RSX and base Mini, for a commuter car, I think there's no contest RSX all the way.

I hear ya. They just don't have any 'soul' But, to get from point A to B... well I think we're on the same page.
The other thing I wanted to mention is when I was last at my dealer for service, they had not one but three Accord '03s with between 1,000 and 7,000 miles on 'em. I wasn't looking to buy but I asked the sales guy what the deal was with those cars and he said the two higher mileage ones were lease returns (1 year lease? I dunno) and the one with 1,000 miles was some guy who bought it and apparently didn't qual. for the financing or something. Anyway, they were like 4 grand less than a comparable new '03. So, that's another option to check out.

If she drives manual, then a Toyota Matrix XRS would be good. If she doesn't, get a Accord, best choice in this price range for young people in my opinion, way better than Civic.
