depends on where you live and what kind of income we're talking about. in SoCal, your single income needs to be about $100k/yr if you're even thinking about starting a family

The $100K number you gave is necessary to live in a nice neighborhood, drive nice cars, eat nice food, etc. You'd need that much to live in semi-luxury, but not get by.

some interesting price facts:
1966:
Gallon of Gasoline = .32 cents
1 dozen eggs = .60 cents
1 gallon Milk = .99 cents
1 first class stamp = .05 cents
2006:
Gallon of gasoline = 2.90
1 dozen eggs = 1.20
1 gallon milk = 3.25
1 first class stamp = .39 cents
Gasoline is now 9 times more expensive than it was 40 years ago.
IF eggs had gone up the same they would cost 5.40 a dozen
IF milk had gone up the same it would cost 8.91 a gallon
and a stamp would cost .45 cents
In perspective, Gasoline HAS risen higher than some of the basic things we buy,
BUT (big but) - the average house cost 23k in 1966, and now costs 238k which either means Gasoline prices are NOT so bad, OR, both Gasoline AND housing costs have skyrocketed and are a rip-off.
