For under $20K, I also give the nod to a used RSX or new Scion TC. But you know, finding a used RSX that hasn't been beaten to death might be hard. Perhaps a new Civic Si if the egg-shape doesn't bother her.

i'd mentioned RSX but she's not big on edgy, sharp angled styling which pretty much bumps out any acura product. the scion might be doable for her but i'm not sure if she'd consider it roomy enough (which is hilarious considering she's 5'3" and 98lbs).

So no Honduh's for the little woman? Can she budget up to 30K? This allows German Audi's (S4) and Bimmers (330), not to mention fast sports cars (obviously not a honda).
What kind of cars does she like?

if she doesn't like sharp edges then get her a vw beetle. that car has virtually no sharp edges. another car she can consider is the new vw jetta. a base one with few options can probably be had for around $20K. the new jetta is hella roomy.

If she previously had a Civic, there are plenty of cars in that class that are very good these days.
The Mazda 3s and Mini Cooper are very fun to drive, while the Corolla XRS and Scion tC are also decent and worth a look if she digs their styling.
Suprisingly good is the Kia Spectra SX, but if there's not enough status in American cars for her to buy them, I doubt she'd even consider a Korean make
