It's just sad that someone would ruin a good car like that, for nothing.
The S2000 transmission synchros do shift smoother at higher RPM, but the engine itself is plenty happy to putt-putt around at 2000 RPM. You can be in 6th by 40 MPH.

S2000 recommended shift points. (From the 2006 owners manual. Emphasis added.) You're not going to hurt the engine at these speeds and gears despite the sky is falling notes on "lugging" the engine. 
40 mph in 3d gear is 4,000rpm in an AP2. Second gear will not pull to 60mph without hitting the rev limiter which means an extra shift is required for a 0-60 time.

i think it's safe to say Honda engines, in general, are MUCH more reliable than Subaru engines. Wasn't Toyota/Subaru replacing engines in early model 86's? reliability in WRX/STi boxer engines wasn't very high either. I'd feel ok driving like that with a Honda engine, but definitely not a Subaru engine.

I've got an AP1 so revs might be different, depending. Did they change the gearing at all from AP1---> AP2?

After seeing a few Subies with engine issues I'm just not too keen on ever owning one. Even though there being a pretty awesome Subie shop by the name of Circuit Motorsports pretty close to where I live....
