I just can't believe that Mazda is finally going to do the rotary Miata and make my beloved car into another "me too" $30k+ gas-guzzling pocket rocket. Now that you have engines like the F20c why even bother with rotary? There are no advantages any more!

Why not, in these days of $55/bbl light sweet crude, return to a modern redux of the 1.6L 4-banger, 35 mpg and 7 seconds 0-60, 1 ton, and a helluva lotta fun at around the price of an RSX.

I wouldn't think it would hurt the RX8's sales much. Mazda used to sell several different cars with the rotary. If my memory is correct we had the RX-2, RX-3, RX-4, a pick-up truck and maybe even the Cosmo all at about the same time.

Different cars for different uses. A person who wants a back seat isn't going to buy a Miata.

I'd love for the Miata to go on a diet and keep a small 4 banger with maybe a little more power. I'd be thrilled with a true Elise fighter for 20 to 25K.

Mazdas and specifically the Miata are not about straight line performance, but rather a complete total balance, that few cars in their price range can offer. I don't think Mazda will make an 'Elise fighter' because they don't have to. The Miata 'beat' the Elise years ago where it counts the most - in Sales. The Protege, Mazda 6, Miata and RX-8 have all be praised time and time again for their balance of power/handling/ride/fun factor and so far it has been working for them, so I can't see them changing that formula.
