The GT engine is not even close to the lightning engine. The lightning has a 2 valve head with a roots blower. The GT is a 4 valve engine with a twin screw supercharger with higher boost.

Ford has almost certainly underrated the GT. The cobra puts out around 400 with the 4.6 at 8 psi. Extrapolating to 12.5 psi gives an approximate 500 hp, not taking into account the extra 50 cubic inches.

Roush is at least partially responsible for the engine design. I think that they are building the production engine as well. Saleen also had a hand in the design.

motor trend tested them side by side:

------GT----Viper
0-50--2.9---3.0
0-60--3.6--3.9
0-100-8.1--8.4
1/4 --11.78@124.3(ford)
-------11.77@123.6(viper)

that's close. If you want to spend $150K on a Vioer you could have 1000 hp.

hm, when road and track ran the viper through the 0-100-0 test, it did 0-100 in 9.2 seconds. maybe they suck at driving? maybe motor trend fudged the numbers? who knows.

Maybe they got an extra strong Viper. There have been S2000 tests as quick as 5.2 sec and as slow as 6.2 sec (0-60)

But what can do the SRT-10 do from 0-150mph? I doubt it can keep up with the GT.

Not flaming but the S2000 is just a Honda and the STi is just a Subaru.
You've gotta give kudos to awsome cars.

What's strange is in the Motor Trend test, the Viper got blown away 0-60, and made up ground at the higher speeds, it was still behind (but less) at 100 mph, and at the 1/4 (120mph +) it had caught up, so it might be the opposite of what you said.

does the viper need a shift before 60? that would account for the extra time, because the GT doesn't need one. it does seem that the Viper was pulling harder in the top end, i can see that because supercharged engines don't tend to have hot top ends...then again, never have i heard of anyone praising a viper's top end , so i don't know. I definitely think Ford threw a ringer in for this test, and I still think that the engine, even if it does go like stink, is out of place. I think that the Saleen S7's engine is more befitting of a car like this, 550 bhp all aluminum 4 valve V8 displacing 7 liters...that's what ford should have done. wouldn't have been too hard, either.

I wonder if ford didn't choose the 5.4 because of its closer relation (or perceived relation) to the rest of the modular lineup. In the same way that Honda touts VTEC as technology taken from F1 and Subaru talks about rally inspired suspension, I think ford wants to be able to point to the GT as a demonstration of what the modular engine can do.

As a side note, I thought that the S7 was a 2v OHV design?

you may be right, it is OHV

The modular thing..i dont know. still seems like a cop out to me, extracting less than 100 hp/litre with forced induction isn't impressive. And, if it's true that they want to demonstrate "what the modular engine is capable of", it should be able to run right all the time...
