Five classics that could double in value in five years
#22
Remember, the allure of the CR was never exclusively about the value proposition of the performance gains over the base s2000. It's the other soft, qualitative, aspects-I,e., Ueahara-san's last project and gift before retiring from making historic contributions to the auto industry, the low numbers and exclusivity of the CR, and it's factory aspect. If one looks back when the CR was first released, it's always been a somewhat controversial example--aesthetics, value proposition, etc. But the fact remains that it has grown as a more desirable car and values continue to soar. Also, those who question its value, take a moment to drive one first. It is Uehara-san's favorite child

Are there any CR parts that were not available to purchase directly through Honda?
I know the Tonneau cover, wing and lip were available, as well as some of the interior stuff. Im not sure which suspension parts were available.
So is it a car that has all sorts of CR-only parts, probably not. I can't think of a good example off the top of my head. Maybe the C6 -> Z06?

A CR is special due to the numbers and the fact NOBODY wanted them in 08-09. They were so heavily discounted. It was a travesty.
It's a numbers game and if you have a CR, do not touch it. Keep it as simple. Put 2,000 miles a year on it because it will be a real collectible.
Concerning other S2's, dime a dozen.

Five classics that could double in value in five years, and the S2000 CR is one of them.

I guess I just don't get the CR. Its rare, its arguably the top dog of S2000s, but in the scheme of things its an S2000 with a few tweaks. $2k worth of tweaks--list prices. I've seen people call it the E30 M3 of S2000s, but those have all different body panels, chassis, suspension, engine... You can't take a regular E30 and put a couple grand in mods to make it better than the M3.
It's also uglier than sin and loses the appeal as a regularly driven car because it has no soft top. I wouldn't trade my AP1 straight across for TWO CRs.

Like the CR or not, it is arguably the top s2000 that came from the factory. I think many of you may forget the simple reality that with such small supply, not many CR's ever hit the market at once, which will keep a high floor in prices. Add to that, a car that is increasingly moving into enthusiast hands that have the disposable cash... I won't be surprised to see the good examples continue to rise in price.

By the time the CR came out the S2000 was a little long in the tooth; hence the luke warm reception initially. Now that buyers are looking at the S2000 in retrospective sense; the CR is the creme of the crop. Makes perfect sense.

I would still prefer a standard s2000, it has an actual retractable soft top. Thats why the CR got a bad reception, the practicality of using it like a convertible is really not there because of the Tonnueau and Hardtop.
If you're buying it to add to a collection then none of that matters.

Best at being a good sports car, not in my opinion. Who wants a car you can't drive top down on a day it MIGHT rain because you'll have no top to put up? It has a very specific, very limited appeal, people who A) value the minute performance advantages, B) can choke back their vomit when seeing the wing and air dam, and C) don't want a functioning convertible top. It's a good thing there are only a few hundred of them because there simply isn't much appeal for a car that specific.
