First bike? How about one like this?

A back pack AND a back protector might prove to be very uncomfortable, but so is a broken back. I've never wor my back protector to commute. YMMV.
I use my OGIO Metro for my laptop / back pack / lunch bag / man purse everyday. OGIO Metro

Its kind of a pain to get the back protector in and out on a regular basis, so I just leave mine in. I also ride with a backpack and other than learning how to get the backpack on while wearing an armored jacket, its fine. Balance is better than trying to handle a loose bag on a bike - if you can't fit it in the bike's storage, use a backpack.

You can find good deals on gear. I have full leathers, a textile suit for the street, and gloves. I got a nice Shark Helmet too all for waaaay under 2k.
Alpinestars Boots - $150 (motonekoparts.com)
Joe Rocket Textile suit - $250 (ebay)
Shark Helmet - $250 (colman powersports)
Fieldsheer Gauntlet Gloves - $45 (coleman powersports)
As you can see not close to 2k. Your budget is fine as long as you shop around and find what fits you well. Ill fitting gear will not protect that well in a crash.

I don't like wearing a backpack on the bike, esp. in the current TX heat. Think I'm going to order a Kriega US-20 tailpack from Aerostich when I get back from vacation.
