First bike? How about one like this?

Yeah... I think I'm probably going to stick to the 250. There are a good number of them available now and I'd rather learn on a lighter/weaker, than a heavier/stronger that isn't really much faster.

My current street bike is a 20 year old NT650 Hawk.... I am riding it cross country in a month.... bought 1500 + about 1K in exhaust and suspension, and another 500 in missc items... brake pads, chain, fork seals and fluids, brake lines, master cylinder, some JB weld, and it runs like new. I am expecting to see if I can get 100K miles on it some day.... Some old bikes are awesome (RC30 for instance), some suck balls.

So everyone here spent 2k on their gear?
My estimates:
Helmet: 350-450 shoei or icon
Jacket: 350 leather icon
Pants: 125 denim with hip/knee and removable liner
Gloves:150 haven't decided on a pair yet.
Footwear: 90 super duty 2 icon
So that puts me just over 1k new, and I may be getting some of it used from my cousin who has extra sets of stuff like gloves, jackets etc.
Is this stuff not acceptable for road use, or is it all crap? Or were you exaggerating to make a point?
btw Freq, the 2008 250 Ninja has carbs too!

Full leathers for mountains - 800
Helmet - 400
Gloves - 125
Boots - 250
back protector - 150
Leather jacket for in town - 400
Rough total: 2,125
Trackdays + race school + consumables + race fees = f@ck, afraid to even guess how much

So I'm not too far off then. I don't intend on much weekend/mountain kind of rides right now, primarily just for commuting to work (fun roads anyway) so I don't need the 800 full leathers yet.
About back protectors... Are they highly suggested for daily commuting, I haven't seen them listed in gear to get too often, and I somewhat remember reading descriptions of jackets that have them built in (checking now) does this sound correct?

Hmm, $2K? Let's see,
I got Motoport's Ultra 2 Cordura 2-pc suit AND their separate Goretex liners for about $650 at a Cycle World show (close-out color). You'd pay somewhere around another $300 at list prices.
Current helmet is a Nolan N102 at $330 (I've owned Arai's, a Shoei, and a KBC). Held Profi gloves for $169. Oxtar Matrix boots at $130 (good sale price).
Call it $1300 and I'm seriously good-to-go for street riding. Yeah, I spent more on winter (Gerbings electrics) and summer (mesh stuff, not expensive) duds just to be comfy. My helmets seem to last two or three years before the interiors get ratty.

For your commuting, will you be carrying a back pack?
Good tip on the free back protectors, I will check that out when I finally go to get my gear. Do most people wear them for regular commuting?
