I can easily believe the CSL hitting 186 mph. A good friend of mine has an e46 m3, and with me in the car (taking video) he hit 170+ without a problem. He does have exhaust, intake, and the electronic limiter (limits top speed to 155)/ecu was reflashed before he bought the car.
With the extra hp not being that big of a factor, the weight difference between a regular m3 and a CSL is quite substantial. With BMW using lightweight materials such as carbon fiber, and glass-fibre plastics otherwised used for aerospace applications, 186 mph is far from a stretch in my opinion.
