Ferrari 355 F1 a good car?
#22
The major problems with the 355 are exhaust headers splitting and valve issues with the early cars. Major repairs such as a motor or tranny rebuild will be QUITE costly so you really need to do your homework before you buy. Check out ferrarichat.com, tons of info. from people who own and have owned these cars.
One positive aspect to owning a used F-car is that they hold their value.

Simon... nice topic , as I have also been doing my homework on the 355.
Here is what I have come up with:
**First off, I've been looking at 95 or 96 355 with a 6-speed, only because the early F1 cars weren't as refined as the late-model F1 vehicles. Plus, I prefer a 6-speed anyways, I love the gate-shifter , F1 isn't an option for me. Also, the 95-96 years will be significantly cheaper than the 97-99 years.
1995- mid 1997 355's had a recall on the valve guides. The late 1997-1999 cars had this valve guide problem fixed at the factory when new. The valve guide fix usually costs around $3k to fix.
**Maintaining the car. Well here is a rough mockup of a maintenance schedule up until 30,000 miles:
-Oil Change**** Every 3k miles @ $500-600
-15k service- Approx. $2000-3000- Oil, Spark Plugs, Fluids, Gear/Trans Oil.
-30k service- Approx. $6000-8000- Oil, Spark Plugs, Fluids, Gear/Trans Oil, Belts, Valve Guide Upgrade
That is considering that nothing is wrong with the car, and no parts have to be replaced.
PM me if you have more questions...
