I've heard that they're not so well put together - apparently cracking between the rear wing and the B pillar is common (also on the 360 so I'm told).

Have to say that the 355 is a georgeous looking car.

I was thinking about maybe getting a F-car.

There are a lot of good Ferrari Forums (go to Google and search ferrari forums). Anyway here is a link to a thread I started regarding cost of ownership. --->>CLICK

Different opinions but the range was $2-5/mile for a typical F-car. So for example if you drive it 8000 miles/year figure $16K-$40K a year. This is for depreciation and maintance and maybe insurance, gas, tires, etc...

Oil change = $500 (for a V8 car)

Major problem = $7000

Oh shit problem = $20,000

As much as I love the F-cars, I can't see having to worry about what's the next problem going to cost me? Is that ticking sound going to cost me $20K?

If you go to those Ferrari Forums, you will find out a lot about the 355 and what to look for.

I don't want to put a damper on the 355, because for looks/style it is one of the best cars ever. However for half the cost of a 355 Ferrari, you can get a new Z06 that will kill the 355 in every performance test I can think of.

The Z06 loses the "Is it a Ferarri?" Test. The F355 is my favorite modern Ferarri. They give me wood.

A 355 would make a good third or fourth car. If you can't afford a fourth car, you'll probably end up having to sell it to stay out of bankruptancy.

I've heard that Ferrari owners average owning seven cars at any one time.

(To compare, I put 15k miles on my S2000 a year, which given rai's rule of thumb would put it at $30k to $75k per year to operate. In other words, if I didn't eat and slept on the street, I might be able to afford it. )

But if you can afford it - go for it. It's the best sounding and looking road car Ferrari has produced in quite a few years.

Beware of the dealer up in Chicago (I forget the name -- it has luxury in it) who sells "cheap 355's". What they don't tell is that the cars are grey market and not legal for registration in the U.S. -- well not without spending an assload of cash anyway.

LUXURY MOTORS is the dealer you are thinking of most likely...I have a friend that almost bought a 360 Modena from them because it was only $99,000......but it was grey market and would cost about $25,000 to certify. Yeah...they left that out until the deal was almost done.

Early model F355's are nightmares for the most part....they had more reliability issues than the later ones. Get a 1999 F355 and most of the issues are fixed.

By today's performace standards, the F355 is not in the big leagues, but the falsetto wail of a 355 w/Tubi at WOT is enough to justify any price. A 355 is higher on my list than a 360 just because of that beautiful sound.
