Man I don't know what else you could do to have this happen to your car. pretty sure drug dealers cars don't have this happen to them. Plus most of these cars sit for a while before being sold so it is a tough call of which would cost the state more. Still a huge waste of money and a perfectly good car. Another question I have is a what point do they crush the car? What if you dispute the ticket? What if you appeal that ruling? I assume they wait but still. Also what evidence do they have? They should have to provide something more tahn a cop pulling over someone that was "racing" to justify destroying a car.

I'm amazed that this is allowed to happen...they'd have to have put me in jail to allow this to happen to my car and this type of thing wouldn't be on 'forgive and forget' list. I'm very surprised that this type of 'policy' hasn't come back to bite them in the ass. I'm a bit perplexed that this is 'allowed' to happen in the US especially given some of the repeat offenders for other crimes that are getting hand slaps.

The car wasn't being crushed for street racing.

Apparently this was a Pre-Production IS-F demo car with no VIN# so it had to be crushed once they were done with it.

^ Correct, it was a demo car. There was no street racing involved

Even if it was a pre-production car, I still believe they shouldn't be crushing a perfectly good car. Maybe put it into a museum, kinda like bmw with their cars..

It seems to be the Japanese mentality towards cars.. Out with the old, in with the new. Its why MKIV Supras, R33/32 GTRs and FD RX7s with thousands of $$ in huge-hp-go-fast parts -- the hottest shit in their day (just a few years ago).. are now worth $7-8K USD!. The R35 is leaps and bounds ahead of an R32/33. The LFA, while ridiculously expensive pays homage to void left when the 2000GT went out of production. Its why the NSX and Supra are so greatly missed and enthusiasts long for new releases. And its why cars like the S2000 are so special.

Anyway, the good news is that some companys (Nissan) DO get "it" - albeit quite a few years after the world lost some S30ZGs... They have a HUGE collection of great past cars, some (since the 80s) added as new concept cars, race cars, pre-production/first run cars, and some others (namely the classics) were later picked up from collectors and such.

Short of dealing drugs, what would warrant getting your car crushed in the States? Repeated hooning / dangerous driving?
they have gone a bit overboard with the 'street racing' punishments here in california.
"a bit"? Confiscation of one's vehicle should be enough as the financial hit would be horrible for a brand new car. But to crush a perfectly good vehicle that could be used in various ways by the local authorities is crazy.

gotta check the calibration on your sarcasm meter

edit: weird, the initial article i saw about it claimed street racing... autoblog or jalopnik had it wrong.
