Default Ethenol "Flex Fuel", whats different in the engine

So here is a question, what mods to manufacturers make in their cars to be flex fuel capable. It can't be too much as GM produced them relatively quick. Is it just a sensor for the fuel and a new mapping on the chip?

Thoughts?

depends on the car, but usually just the fuel system if produced with higher grade materials. The ethanol is much more corrosive than regular fuel so all the cheap rubber lines have to be replaced with higher quality material. The bad thing is that they cannot retune the engine to take advantage of the higher octane e85 because it still has to run on gas too.

From time to time I have a rental cars that are FFV's. I think it is a nice system that could have been taken advantage of so many years ago already...

I found the below to be a handy reference
