Entire New York City Yellow Cabs going Hybrid...
The city's yellow taxi fleet will go entirely hybrid within five years, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday.
Nearly 400 fuel-efficient hybrids have been tested in the city's taxi fleet over the past 18 months, with models including the Toyota Prius, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, the Lexus RX 400h and the Ford Escape.
Under Bloomberg's plan, that number will increase to 1,000 by October 2008, then will grow by about 20 percent each year until 2012, when every yellow cab

I think so too, great policy. Hybrids are perfect for this, much of the time the gas motor won't even be kicking since its a lot of idling at lights, stuck in traffic, or low speed diving.

arent there more efficient vehicles than a standard hybrid? something still in the works that could possibly eliminate the entire use of gasoline... sounds like a great idea, but not if in 10 years there will be 100% efficient cars making today's hybrid yesterday's chevy suburban

In the case of a cab, hybrids really make a lot of sense. They are being used where the hybrid system provides the most gain, in stop and go traffic. The systems will shut down the engines while idling and save gas during the stop and go acceleration.
The only big issue I see is passenger space and safety. The old cabs had a good bit of room for three across the back seating. The hybrids are all rather tight in that regard. The other is the cage around the cabby. The taxies can use the same cages used in police cars. Has anyone designed a cage for the Prius?

I was in a 400h cab today. Looked like they replaced all the leather and wood trim with vinyl and plastic. And they enclosed the driver in a plexiglass box.
Never been in a hybrid before and it was quite amazing how quickly the car got up and went.
