Elise's Engine or S2000's engine
Well I haven't been in this forum long enough to know if this has been posted before, but I'm really curious to which engine is better. I know that the elise's engine is a toyota's, and it's basically a knock off of VTEC. Correct me if I'm wrong, this is just what I know. The Elise's engine displacement at 1.8 liters and S2000's engine at 2.0 and 2.2 liters. For a 1.8 liter engine, the toyota engine makes about 190hp correct? I think it's very impressive for the engine size. Not sure how much of a weight difference there is between the s2000's and Elise's, but the Elise is a fast car. Not only that, but the fuel economy on that car is above 30mpg. The s2000's engine, it's slightly bigger, but why is the fuel economy rather poor for a 4 cylinder. I also own an accord v6 and i averaged about 27mpg. Similar to my s2000's mpg. So guys and girls, that's all I know so far in contrast of the engines. Please inform me and give your opinion on which is the better engine. Thanks!

I think the Elise engine is better in the Elise and the S2000 engine is better in the S2000...
I guess the point is that since the Elise/Toyota transverse designed engine and the S2000 F20 longitudinal engine is really hard to compare out of their vehicles. Now, if you were to compare the toyota engine vs. the K20 series...

I had the Elise motor in my 2003 Pontiac Vibe GT. It felt really flat in the midrange, had OKAY low-end, especially for a 1.8L. The top end when 'lift' (Toyota's equivalent of VTEC) kicked in around 6,200rpm was a blast, especially with a cold air intake. That sucker really screamed on up to it's 8,250 fuel cutoff.
In the Elise, they reprogrammed the ECU, added a bit more aggressive exhaust, and bumped the rev limit a little bit. They also added an oil cooler for durability.
I would say the S2000 motor is a bit better and more advanced. The good fuel economy in the Elise is due to that car weighing 800!!! LBS less than an S2000.
The 2ZZ motor from Toyota is currently in the following cars (off the top of my head)
Toyota Matrix XRS
Toyota Corolla XRS
Toyota Celica GTS
Pontiac Vibe GT
Lotus Elise
As you can see, the S2000 motor is definitely more 'rare' if anything. The F20 has only ever gone in the S2000.

The F20 is a better engine. The 2zz has some issues as does the tranny it's coupled to. As for being technically advanced.. It probably depends on what you're looking at. The F20C is advanced in that you can rev to 9k all day everyday, but the 2zz has a more advanced valvetrain with it's VVTL-i, which is more like i-VTEC.

You beat me to it. The s2000 is 120 hp/litre, toyota engine puts out 100/litre but with the elise, they used a different ecu so bumped it up to 190 hp instead of 180. I've driven my friend's toyota matrix xrs and it feels weak.
