I've heard nothing but great things about the Fit. It's still a bit goofy-looking to me from certain angles (like the Z4) but it's growing on me. I'd rule out the Yaris just because I hate the gauges being in the middle of the car. The Corolla is the best bet if your friend is not a car enthusiast. Its built-quality is good and I believe it rides quieter/smoother than the Fit. However, it's also priced higher compared to others.

I would take a good look at the new Nissan Sentra and Versa also. Those have some pretty nice interiors.

The new Hyundai Elantra is supposed to be a class leader, too

Toyotas have the worst driving positions - imo the seats are too short, the pedals are too close, and the wheel is too far away. Plus, they're boring.

I say Fit - better seating position, better car imo. You can read up on the recent compact car comparos at Car and Driver - http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/10...eap-skates.html

Strictly Economy? The tercel won that battle long ago. The corolla holds the title now. The civic is a close second, but the good ol' days of the 40mpg hx days are long gone.

This is an all-time first for me, but I'm going to go ahead and do it.. God this is going to be tough..

The newer body style Hyundai Sonata is a steal. The SK's have overhauled everything and built a cheap car that's built pretty damn well. It almost rivals accord in performance/features but you can find a used one [I believe the warranty is transferable, if not forget it] for dirt cheap.
