drove the 968 at track for the first time

They are definitely a pain in the neck to maintain or work on. Dad just did a motor swap and he had to pull the engine (duh), tranny, driveshaft, and front suspension to do it. He has a garage, though, with a lift in it and such so it's a lot easier. He also had nothing to do for three days.

Upgrade your sway bars and bushings to M030 and it will improve the handling greatly. Drill a couple of holes in the airbox and add a chip from RSBarn or Promax and you will have a different car. I own 2 968s currently and I am quite happy with them from a maintenance, performance and comfort standpoint. There are a few old 968 owners on this site so you may glean some more info if they chime in. I know you are on rennlist but you might want ot check out 968forums.com and 968.net as well.

The clutch on the 968 is far easier than the clutch on the 944, I just did one of mine a couple of months ago. The Turbo S and th 968 CS were not drag machines either the Turbo was limited by racing class specs and there are a few much more powerful Turbos out there.
My Mechanic has one of the Factory Turbos and it does nicely against cars from it's time period and a few newer cars on the track.
If I could get the shifter feel of my S2000 in the 968 it would be just about perfect.

I find it interesting that the 968 gets due respect on this forum, while the 986 Boxster gets pilloried constantly.
For the record, having owned and raced both cars, I think that in most cases it would be a driver's race around a track. The S2000 has higher ultimate potential, but the 968's much easier to drive.
The 968's a great car, although the S2000 feels light years more modern.

speed_bump, thanks for the advice. i'll definitely look into the bushing as it seems like the stock ones are tired and making slight noise once in a while.

Great write-ups, links, etc.,
I didn't realize the 968s were STILL very capable track cars; however, being from the Porsche family, I should have known better.
I always like the look of the 944s and especially the 968s.

I was looking at 944's and 944 T's a few months ago. What scared me away was the sky high bills and receipts on the Turbo's. I know a guy in Dallas who has spent $140-150k on his 944T. He is Very Very well off so he didn't care.
The non turbo cars are very reasonable and quite reliable. I just went with a SM instead.

Yeah the 968 still does OK on the track. This one finished 2nd overall (996 cup car won) in the Cascades 8 hour enduro on 10/21
