Can a really awsome front driver be made that is fun to drive be made? Yes. CRX's, ITR's and RSX's proved that.
but know of those are 2 seat roadsters.

Man, this is so dumb, wasnt' this supposed to be an s2000 killer? Now, its not even a Miata killer? lol

Instead of scrapping the car, they make it FWD for CAFE standards? next time they pass national averages for mpg, they should take account for quantity of cars sold, otherwise carmakers can make these crappy cars just to boost their average.
/agree
I don't see this car selling very well.

But you know they'll sell a ton because they'll be cheap, cute, and probably okay looking.

I thought they already had a cheap FWD convertible, the Sebring. Just looked at the Chrysler website but at $26k I wouldn't call it cheap, but it is a convertible hardtop. They make the $40k Crossfire too, does anybody buy those? I guess a sub $20k convertible fits into the portfolio where I thought the Sebring already was. With the Solstice at $23k and Miata $21k, I guess they have to use the Chery chassis to get the price down. If it isn't going to be rear drive it really isn't going to be a Demon, they should call it the Shadow Part Deux.
The Sebring sedan is being axed. So is the Crossfire. Overall, nine models are being axed, and new product is supposed to be coming, but a fwd two seater convertible? I don't see the market, but I guess we'll see. Do we really need another Dodge Shadow?

I don't think CAFE standards just take one of each model and average them and get a number for the manufacturer. I assume it's based on #s sold or at least produced. But I'm no expert by any means.

Corporate Average Fuel Economy, right? Like a fleet average I thought. By going FWD they gain at best 3mpg, which may be nothing to sneer at.

But WTF. Why make the thing FWD? To get 10% more efficiency in power to the ground and equivalent fuel economy? BAH. That plus chinese labor makes me think "cutting costs, at any price."

To me, that is disappointing on two levels:

FWD limits a lot of the sports and tuning potential of the car, and it cuts me (and many other S2KIers) out of the market of the down-the-road SRT-4 Demon idea before I even see it. But I'm in a different market segment (spent $30k, not $15k), and I already bought one, so I won't hurt their sales any, and they probably don't care much. Which brings me to the real disappointment.

Why are base American makes taking the "cheaper than euro/japanese-cars" ball and running with it so much? Couldn't they at least go with the "better car for the same money" approach a bit until they get a better image? I would like to buy american, but as an example, until the Mustang GT gets a rear suspension, I'll pay the extra and buy a 350Z anyday.
