Funny, I was just thinking the opposite: In the world of bikes, there can *definitely* be such a thing as too much power. They just become dangerous and nearly unridable in many situations.

I think there is a car (or many cars) that is/ are too fast for everyone. Many of us (yes, me included) can get into a situation where the S2000 is too fast. If I am driving faster then my skill level can handle and make a mistake hurting the car, myself, or God forbid, someone else, tehn the S2000 is too fast for me. Anyone that thinks there isn't a car built that isn't too fast for them is a fool and they would have won both Indy and the Coca Cola this past weekend.
O.K. I am off fo my soap box now.

It's not the car that is too fast. It's the driver that makes it go too fast. For some, a Yugo would be too fast.

Hmm. If a car will spin its tires at full throttle in its top gear, then yeah it has too much power.

Nah, on second though you just need to change the gearing.

See sig.

I was thinking the same thing. The first sportbike I owned was capable of 0-60 in 3.3 and qrt. mile 11.44@120. When I first got it I gradually increased my riding speed I can remember getting it up to a little over 100 on a deserted freeway and thinking this is too fast. A couple of months later I was doing 110-150 m.p.h. sprints and riding flat out at 140+. Speed IME is something that your body gets used to and any h.p. machine be it car, bike etc needs to be eased into and mastered and treated with respect or it will chew up the rider/operator and spit them out. I would never get into any car and push it to its limits without getting a feel for it first.

That point would come for me when I couldnt get traction in 3rd gear on ET Streets. So umm I am probably a couple hundred horsepower away.

No car too fast, just drivers too slow.

Ah sportbikes... what is too powerful? When will the power surge stop? People have been wondering this for years in the sportbike world, and every year, bikes get faster and faster. What was yesterday's "DEATH MACHINE"(think YZF1000) is today's "overweight and Down on power" bike that nobody wants. The GSXR1000 is the bike that is REALLY pushing the envelope as "what is too fast" or overkill for the street. I have owned a YZF R1 (about 10.2@138mph) and you say that no one can really use that sort of power on the street? But I say of course you can!!! It's not like getting up to 140 in a s2000 where it takes a better part of the day to get there, you simply twist the throttle (downshifting is optional on a big liter bike) and before you realize what is going on, you will be easily doubling the speed limit on the interstate. No huss, no fuss. It's a lot easier to safely speed when you can do it in the shortest distance and get back down to sane speeds before anyone sees you.

Will everyday common sports cars ever reach the power envelope of the modern sportbike (9 second 1/4 mile times)? I doubt it, but if Honda wants to be able to compete with the other car manufacturers who are putting out 300+ hp to $30,000 cars, then they need to up the ante. And that's how it begins, one manufacturer trying to outdo the other. But when will it stop? Who knows, but if the current trend continues, we should all be driving 400hp, 2500 pound, and $30,000 sports cars by 2010.
