Diesel Cars
#3
Diesels get about 30% more fuel efficiency for a given displacement. So, they're cost efficient to run, even when diesel is more expensive. So, if gas is $4.00/gal, diesel makes sense to use all the way up to $5.20/gal.
With some cars, the diesel/gasoline difference is even higher. The new 2.2L diesel TSX/Euro Accord can get up to 58 mpg on the highway vs, say, 32 mpg for the 2.4L TSX. That's a BIG jump (closer to 60% than 30%)!

I get 44/52 mpg in my TDI. It's not nearly as fast as my S2000, but that's not important when you're sitting in traffic.
My S2k gets 25/29 ... with premium around 4.35 and diesel around 4.70, it's still significantly cheaper to drive. Also factor in extended oil change intervals 10K, and the fact that diesels run forever, and you're looking at a pretty good deal. If you drive enough, especially on the highway, it's worth looking into.

I had a diesel benz. It was a TANK, but still got 30-35mpg. I once drove it set at cruise at 100mph for 2 hours straight. I finally sold it with 235000 miles on it and it still drove great.
