yeah I agree this won't get the US off petrol completely - they said the plant would need to be the size of chicago and, the bigger problem is the food for the bacteria - there just isn't that much energy in woodchips or whatever they use - they're gonna need a really dense source of energy to let the bacteria turn into oil. Sugarcane comes to mind, but even then I bet the field would have to be 1/2 the size of the US.
Those complications aside, if we continue to innovate like this, someone will figure something out that works.

And for the record, I think this is a great idea. Even if it only provides 10% of our oil supply, it's still better than nothing and will do wonders at reducing the price of oil.

i like the net effects are "carbon negative" statement. that means the green arguments could be appeased. this tech could offset some of the fuel burning so (while other tech develops) we can keep using gas but regulate/mitigate its emission effects so everybody is happy.

These same types of statements were said about electricity and nuclear energry as well.

There's a similar effort underway with special algae. Imagine clear plastic racks of green algae oriented to absorb maximum sunlight. The algae, like many other plant via photosynthesis, then turn the sunlight into carbohydrates and vegetable oils which are processed into fuel. It's a much more efficient process than corn, switch grass, sugar cane or whatever.
And then you can feed the waste to these little animals for even further efficiency.
