Delorean's unbuilt motor
This was an extremely interesting article I read the other day about Delorean's idea for a new motor. Thought I'd share.

Deloren was a genius and one of the great automotive minds the industry has ever known. Way ahead of his time, all of the time. Thanks for sharing.

Little known fact - it was actual Delorean himself that came up with the idea for the flux capacitor. He just handed it off to Doc Brown to work out the technical details.

Interesting engine design, alot of it was over my head, but the swashplate design is very intriguing. I wonder though, cooling would be an issue for a barrel type design.

What makes a modern engine so great is its inherent robustness. This design looks far more fragile. That said, if Mazda could make the rotary engine work, then this one would probably be worth a shot. I suspect though, there is a reason this design has never been attempted before.

I imagine the swashplate being an inherent weak link.

It seems feasible, but to me there looks like there'd be too many contact points. The swash plate idea is a great idea! But then again you have to think of how many rpm it's turning. The plate itself would have to be coated with a low friction surface (molybdenum would work) along with the guides for the piston rods. then you have to think about lubrication

So cool, but I wonder how the cooling would be on the inside cylinder walls.
